The Brief for the Sonic Hut was to design an acoustic environment for one of the Cones from Bronze Bell Series of the Dutch artist Harmen Brethouwer. The Collector hut begins with the idea of a number of slightly different sonic collecting pods hidden inside a solid square object. The exterior object is clad in a thin lightweight cement board that has been tooled with a pattern that alludes to other mineral based materials. This gives the entire object the appearance of a floating stone slab, even though the pattern is suggestively artificial. The exterior mass hovers around a series of legs that form the structure of each pod. One enters the hut by ducking under the mass at a central bay that is free from the ground. Each pod is clad in copper forming different focused sonic experiences. These pods gather the tones of the bell from the lower regions, collecting and focusing them closer to ear height. As the listener turns away from the visual experience, the aural experience intensifies within each of the eight pods surrounding the cone.
