Ibañez Kim is a genre-defiant design practice that works with sensate materials, atmospheres, sound, and new media to generate architecture, objects, and cities. The founding principals Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim produce designs of high and low systems, cultures, and durations.

We once believed in spirits and anima, a motivating vitae that propelled all matter. 龍 commanded the weather, as well as the Basque culture’s Mari Urraca. Various あやかし steal away or allure travelers in the woods or by lakes. These nonhuman agents were everything and everywhere, always in tension with our anthropocentric worlds. In architecture, hunky punks in England and French gargoyles ward off evil spirits, and ද්වාර පාලක මුර දේවතාවන් stand guard at entry gates. With augmented reality, a strange aspect of the animistic world reemerges. What was hidden by magic and revealed by shamans, is now available again through devices that are likened to McLuhan’s gadget or the Claude Glass (but not Banham’s gizmo). Our Kobugi is a mountain-as-architecture or अकूपार. As primal as a cave but fully figured as a raw object. Kobugi can be as small as a rock or as large as Buenos Aires. It’s in your space right now.
